Welcome

This web site is dedicated to the Kaituna River.

The Kaituna River flows out of Lake Rotoiti 20km north of Rotorua city centre.  The unique character of the bush, gorge and whitewater make it a popular destination for walkers, rafters and kayakers.  The upper gorges are some of the most accessible classy class IV kayaking in the North Island.  The lower gorges provide some of the only remaining wilderness kayaking in the North Island.

Bay of Plenty Energy is proposing to construct a 13.5 MW hydro electric power dam below trout pool falls effectively flooding the section known as Awesome Gorge and diverting the water from Gnarly Gorge.  This will generate electricity to power approximately 10,000 homes.

See Bay of Plenty Energy’s website http://www.bope.co.nz/generation/kaituna for their description and map of the proposed dam.

The Kaituna has been included in the nationwide Wild Rivers campaign supported by Whitewater NZ, Forest and Bird, Fish and Game, FMC and other organisations:
