We all need wilderness places in our lives, a possible place that we can escape to. Few places exist in the modern world, that only a few people will ever set foot, the summit of Mt Everest is one such place. The georges of the Kaituna river are another, just as special and unique. The Kaituna is known around the world as NZ's most famous river, images of the Kaituna water falls have been used on post cards for more than 100 years. The local Iwi have collected food as the name of the river suggests "Kai - food and Tuna - Eel" weavers have taken plants found only on the banks of the Kaituna river for possibly 1000 years. Maori wariors have washed blood from their bodies in scared pools on the river after battle. Yet now our need for electricity threatens to flood this mighty section of river for ever. How can we let this happen?
